How to Open a Garage Door Manually

Have you ever wondered what would happen to your garage door if there was a power cut or a problem with the motor? Luckily, all modern electronic garage doors have a means by which they can be opened manually if you ever encounter a problem. This means that if there is a problem access can still be gained in and out. The method involves disconnecting the garage door from the powered carriage but is still sitting normally on the track. Once, disconnected the garage door can be opened and closed manually.

Here is what you should do:

The first thing that needs to be done is locate a red cord that will be hanging from a bracket, usually close to the door. You may need to use a ladder to find this. Most manufacturers colour the cords red but if you haven't got a red cord, but there is still a cord there, it is probably the correct one. Either way, it will have a sort of knob on the end.

If you pull this cord downwards you will discover that it is attached to a spring loaded lever that will normally be pointing at an angle of 15 degrees. Pull the lever until it is pointing downwards.

You should now be able to lift the door manually but make sure that you try with two hands to avoid injury. If you are unable to move the door, you should check that the cord is pulled down as far as it will go. If the door is too heavy, ask someone to help you.

Remember that there is nothing stopping the door from closing again so make sure that you keep hold of it. Once you have opened the door you need some way of supporting it. This could be another person or by propping it open with a suitable thickness plank of wood. Once you have your vehicle out of the garage, close the door gently by hand.

To lock the door again you will need to pull down again on the red cord. This will keep the door locked in place until either the power comes back on or you want to open it manually again. Just be careful to watch that the bracket slips back into the chain. If you try to open the door automatically but it doesn't work and the chain is still moving, pull the chain making sure that the bracket then locks securely in place.

General Tips

Always keep moving parts such as the chain and rollers lubricated. This will make the door easier to move manually but will also mean that they are quieter when in operation and the reduced friction will lead to less wear and tear on the mechanisms.

Consult with the user manual before trying any repairs to your garage door. It is possible to damage the door or worse still, cause and injury to you or someone close by.

Warning!

Never pull the red cord when the door is in the open position as it will cause the door to come off its mountings, potentially falling on the floor.
