Determining Which Types of Garage Door Will Fit Your Garage Door Opening
If you are considering buying a new or replacement garage door, then there are many different options available to you.
The different types of garage door systems range from standard side hinged and "up and over" garage doors, to roller, sectional and sliding doors. Each door type will have different features and different usability benefits, so it is a good idea to acquaint yourself with the different options that are available.
What is available and what are the fitting requirements?
Because different garage door mechanisms operate in different ways they have different fittings and varying internal (and external) space requirements. These requirements can limit what will or will not fit into or across your garage door opening.
Here is a brief guide to help you ascertain which door opening mechanisms will fit in your garage.
Side hinged doors
Side hinged doors are the most versatile of all opening systems and provided that: firstly, a frame (casement) can be fitted and secondly, there is room to open the door outwards, they will fit all openings. These doors are usually fitted in two sections which can be of equal size, or of a one third to two thirds door size ratio.
Up and over doors
These doors require both space above the opening and room for fittings on the side walls adjacent to the opening. In the case of a standard up and over door, the door will also project by about one third of its length at the head of the entrance when open. A retractable up and over does not project outwards.
Roller doors
Doors adopting a roller mechanism store by wrapping around a drum (or roller) that is fitted above and slightly behind the opening. They take up very little space (less than any other door type) and can also be left partially open. Provided that there is adequate room above the opening, this type of door is very efficient in its use of space.
Sliding doors
Sliding doors require a track at the top and bottom of the opening. This track extends to one side of the opening to the position where the door is stored when the garage is open. The advantage of fitting this type of door is two fold. Firstly, it requires limited space above the opening and secondly the tracks can be fitted inside or outside of the garage walls. This makes it very versatile if space within a garage is restricted.
Sectional doors
A garage door with a sectional composition works like a sliding door, only it slides upwards into the roof space above the garage entrance. This means that the garage requires significant space above and behind the door's opening, but that the areas to the sides of the opening are free from any fittings.
Other considerations
Ensuring that your preferred garage door mechanism will fit is an obvious priority, but just as important is confirming that the roof construction and walls are structurally capable of taking the weight and stresses of the new garage door.
That said, garage doors are designed specifically to fit the size and structural limitations of outbuildings and structural integrity is rarely a problem.
Doors operated by electric motor and remote control tend to have a smooth impact free movement which reduces working stresses, however the motor will add an extra weight
